The answer to the unending question

"Here is the answer." "The answer to what" she replied. "The answer to everything..." he continued. "What? ...  You're mad." "This is very possible my dear, but mostly because I believe it to be possible still...." "I'm confused..., why would..." she started, but he cut her off..."sorry darling, I have to continue this thought, so please bear with me..." First, when contemplating an answer you must ponder the question... it is imperative to ask the right question. ...and Einstein once said that the most complicated theories must be understood by children or they are useless. So the question must be simple, and it must be sensical, not be dissuaded by emotional attachment and have answers that will stand the test of time. The question that haunts me is the one that ties the world I live in everyday to the world that I believe unfolds around me at my behest and without my permission.  The question i...

Self-Defense and Non-classical Wing Chun

Here's a little non-classical wing chun for you from the floors of Pillars of Health. Wing Chun was created in the 1700's by the lady "Wing Chun" (meaning beautiful springtime) and was later adapted by Bruce Lee and Jesse Glover to be a form of self-defense that is incredibly effective because it uses the yin movements of a relaxed practitioner, and the powerful explosiveness of Bruce Lees's teachings. As bruce Lee said, a great practitioner does not strike ..."it strikes all by itself", with deadly efficacy allowing the defender to either escape harm, or damage the attacker sufficiently to dispel the notion of a further attack. Our instructor has over 47 years of experience in teaching self-defense and we are constantly amazed by how simple it is to learn, but difficult to master. Here is a couple teasers of what we teach at Pillars of Health: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9wtcjXmIRI&feature=plcp&context=C3dbbe49UDOEgsToPDskLCQ4Idi1c...

Lose weight, sweat and don't lift a finger...

Sound too good to be true? It isn't... InfraRed Saunas burn an average of 600 Calories while you sit and sweat whilst reading your favorite book or trashy magazine.  It's not a substitute for a good workout by any stretch of the imagination, but it is an incredible complement to your weight loss approach or a great companion on your journey towards better health.  It's also an amazing for pain management for chronic pain and unbelievable for healing wounds! They're also an incredible way to release toxins, as far infrared is known to penetrate into the skin about an inch and a half and can access tough-to-reach toxins built-ups in fat and muscle cells. Pillars of Health's Far infrared sauna comes from  http://www.radianthealthsaunas.com/  (you can do more reading about the health benefits here). We will be receiving it in mid-march!  Get ready to SWEAT! Come see what Vancouver's premier personal training studio is all about:  http:/...

No such thing as a straight line

There is no such thing as a straight line in nature. Think of one.   I can't.  Funnily, i believe a large percentage of injuries and arthritic conditions can be avoided by simply living with a direct 'feet-on' connection to nature rather than trying to pave her entirety so we might exist on multiple flat planes....with flat feet... supported by, yet removed from mother nature forever by the 1/2" of rubber underneath us.... In the personal training world we teach instability as a means of gaining stability, uneven surfaces to stimulate kinesthetic awareness and through the nerves and musculature and therefore arches of the feet a knowledge of your connection to your surroundings. We know that rotary and corkscrew motions are the most powerful functionally. We know that motion is better than no motion. That stagnation in anything causes death. We know that disturbing a circular system such as an ecosystem damages it through its inability to deal with positive feedb...

Pillars of Health - Who are you?

WHAT IS PILLARS OF HEALTH? Pillars of Health is a 5 tiered health concept which initially developed into a business of the same name. Now it is known as PohFolk (or Pillars.of.Health Folk) These tiers (referred to as pillars) are the 5 things that every man, woman and child on this planet must do to survive. These five things are simply; Eat, Drink, Breathe, Sleep and Move. Einstein once said ‘Any theory that cannot be explained to a child is probably worthless’. This is our governing ideology. This program is designed to show the correlation between the Pillars and how that affects health. It then shows you how to change the aspects of lifestyle so that these Pillars work for the individual or group. Due to the simplicity of the program it can be tailored to ANY setting; be it corporate, clinical, educational, etc…. The other element of Pillars of Health is that it is based in (and as such, follows) ecology closely; this is an eco-friendly business that promotes and...

Seasonal Recipes - Episode 1

In order to stick to Pillars of Health 's ideologies be nice to the planet, to our bodies and to our tastebuds I've teamed up with AMAZING chef Simon Vine and nutritionist Kristina Kozicynaite to create some tantalizing taste sensations that are easy to make, eco-friendly, nutritionally superior and easy to make! Yesterday's creation was an Ocean-wise  sable-fish encrusted with Walnuts (BC-grown) topped with basil, a parsnip mash and a carrot, apple and red & orange beet slaw. After being miso-coated it is covered in crushed walnuts, then the fish was braised slightly with a miso and organic maple syrup glaze (YUMMY!) and then baked for about 10-12 minutes in the oven on high temperature to keep the fish juicy. The parsnips were boiled and mashed (and the juices kept for soup stock for a later date) and lightly sprinkled with Sea Salt.  The carrot, beets and apple were grated raw and made for a beautiful color feature when we plated this delicacy! The food was p...

Bruce Lee, Street Fighter

"Drop your weight" my instructor tells me...  "Relax"...   "...stop thinking".  "Let it flow". "Slow yourself down"...  "Be like water".... These are teachings that have been passed down for generations through the world of Kung Fu.  Bruce Lee coined the "one-inch punch" and showed the power you could develop from taking these principles and then applying your rotary, gravitational and extension forces towards a foreign object.  But first and foremost you had to be relaxed... Interestingly, the video game 'Street Fighter' taught me this at an early age, but I didn't listen because I was too busy mashing the buttons on the arcade console scared that I was gonna get my ass handed to me once again.  But now, even if you watch the characters in one of the most popular video games in my generation (the 30 somethings...) these characters do this if I, the controller, has the foresight to time them properly ...

Revival Strongman

#ShameOnYouCrossfit. Shame. Alas, I've had to rehabilitate a number of people after coming through the crossfit program. This video will give you some insight into why.... It's too bad that the education needed to teach crossfit isn't better, as every single one of these people would be lifting WAY less than this. For obvious reasons Olympic lifting is about the form, this is the most important, and not the weight...ESPECIALLY when you start (and these are OBVIOUSLY beginners). The idea of a fitness community and self-challenge is great, but not at the expense of form and safety. CROSSFIT FAIL Ben
